Welcome to the East Riding of Yorkshire

12 March, 2009

Welcome to the new and updated site for the Messingham and Elliott families of the east Riding of Yorkshire. Much of the information on the old site has been reformatted and included on this site. Over the coming weeks I will be updating the information.

There are no frills on this web site, so if you are looking for anything other than historical family details of the Messingham and Elliott families, I am afraid you are in the wrong place or have been mis-directed.This site is about research into the Messingham and Elliott families, and other families which are associated with them through marriage.

There are many small towns and villages throughout the county of Yorkshire much more famous than the ones I am connected with. So, I am going to concentrate on 'my' villages listed on the left. These are the main places where my ancestors lived, and I hope that a brief history of those villages gives an insight into where and how they lived. It is my intention to highlight these lesser known places which give a backdrop to my family's history because it is here that my ancestors were born, lived and died and were buried.

At present, the following names I am interested in researching are: Bray, Brigland/Briglin/Brigling, Clark, Clarkson, Elliott, Foster, Hunter, Hutchinson, Jackson, Massingham, Messingham, Morris, Ogram, Ombler, Pearce, W(h)isker. Follow the links on the left to take you back. More will be added as information becomes available.

More recently I have received information on my father's side of the family, bringing yet more names. These include Moore, Twidale and Ralph and I am very grateful to my cousin, who supplied me with this information.

Information on this site may be used providing the source is acknowledged. I acknowledge the information from Peter Massingham's site which helped to 'fit' my ancestors where they belonged. I am also very grateful for the many people from around the world who have contributed additional information.

I have a lot of information, not yet confirmed, which may assist others in their searches. Please leave a message in my Guest Book and I will check the information I have. As confirmed information becomes available, these pages will be updated, with acknowledgements made to the source.

Greenwich Meridian Line

On more of a local history note, the Greenwich Meridian runs down the eastern side of Patrington village, as can be seen from the photograph on the right, and suitably marked by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

There are many more notable things about East Yorkshire, and I hope to mark a few more as I gather more information on these pages.
