Ryehill

East Riding of Yorkshire

Ryehill is a small 'rural hamlet' on the A1033 nearly halfway between Hull and Withernsea, between Thorngumbald and Keyingham, close to Burstwick.

A windmill has been recorded in Ryehill since the 14th century. In 1685 the mill stood in West field but was later demolished (by 1748). Ryehill windmill was rebuilt by 1772 but it is not known whether it was built on the same site as the previous windmill. However, a windmill stood in Ryehill during the 19th century, on the site where Mill House now stands in Station Road (now Burstwick) and was worked until 1915. My great, great, great grandfather, Robert Hutchinson was the miller, as was his father before him.
